Where to begin with this latest addition to the Work/Spaces Project... Son of a Sailor was one of the first shops I fell in love with when I was first launching Balue/Co. on Etsy, and remains one of my favorites to this day. Jessica and William's love of clean form and color is evident in every piece in their collection, and perfectly balances with the playful, cheery elements in their Austin home studio. I love that their work aesthetic combines such distinct elements of both of their styles and interests–creating one cohesive, well-designed, and darn cute collection.
"Our designs are born out of a collaboration between William and I. None of our work would be possible without both of our minds, both of our hands, and both of our creativity. Without one of us, Son of a Sailor wouldn't exist, and that is one of the things that I think makes it so special.
Our studio was born the moment we purchased our home. While our kitchen is arguably the heart of our home, the studio is definitely the brain. We are always rearranging and organizing, and this room allows us to spread out and dedicate space to the process. It is full of color and light and little things that make us happy. It is a constant challenge to contain the materials with which we create, but the concept that we have the space to keep all of our creative supplies is something that we don't take for granted.
Often we spill out into the rest of our home with our work. Often times the bracelets and necklaces we make are done at the kitchen table. It's hard to leave work sometimes (well, pretty much all of the time), but when your work is something you love to do, it's sometimes nice to have it fold into the rest of your life. Well, the creation part, anyhow... the accounting can stay out of our living room!
Our ideas come from a playful, happy, and creative place. They are fostered and inspired by one another, by our home, by our friends, and our city. We love each other, where we live, and what we do. We hope that energy is translated into our designs." –Jessica
