As I've mentioned, I'm working on a wedding suite for a friend's upcoming wedding. The other weekend we went and visited the letterpress shop we're working with, Pike Street Press, in downtown Seattle. Owner and pressman Sean Brown (who we randomly discovered went to high school with us, small world!) has created a beautiful studio and gallery in his spacious shop. After talking wedding design, he was nice enough to share a bit about how his space influences his creativity, and let me snap a few shots...
"Having a firm base and layout to my studio, with a solid foundation, helps with my work flow. I work in the back, and display art and retail in the front. This small separation helps keep me focused and on task (most of the time).
Walking in every day and having a mix of different print work and artist's work on display helps me to stay creative and inspired to keep working.
I keep a lot of inspiring creative words and people around me that help keep me thankful, motivated and hungry.
I built the space by myself, with the help of a few friends. I painted the floors and walls, set up cables, fixed trim, set up equipment, installed electrical, hammered, screwed, and much much more. I literally have put my blood and sweat into my work and workspace, and knowing that helps me to stay motivated and keep moving forward.
To have the strength to print every single day is not easy and not for everyone. It does get daunting and stressful, but I wouldn't change it for the world – my goal is to do this forever.
I love what I do, and knowing that keeps me inspired." – Sean
